They just don't make 'em like they used to? I picked up an old Stormbird, used, before I bought the 2018 Custom Shop re-issue Stormbird. The serial number of my old one starts with 04 and it's on a paper stick-on label, so it is pretty old, but still in excellent condition. I decided to make a comparison between my old Stormbird and the new one - and there are some differences.. To start with, the new 'bird is a full pound lighter than the old one -at just about 7 lbs. vs almost 8 lbs. That makes sense, since the new 'bird is smaller - about 1/2" narrower at the waist, and a full inch narrower at the lower bout. The headstock is also slimmer (I think it's much better looking). For those who care, the Eastwood name is in a different font. That doesn't seem to affect the playing too much 'though. The volume and tone controls are arranged differently. On the new 'bird the 2 volumes are the top 2 knobs, and the tones are the 2 lower knobs (better for volume swells, I guess). The old 'bird has volume, tone for the top 2 knob for the neck pup, and volume, tone on the bottom 2 knobs for the bridge pup. Both 'birds have the jack on the side at the lower corner where you would expect it. On the new 'bird it is facing more toward the bottom and on the old 'bird it faces more to the side. Otherwise, the hardware is pretty much identical - tune-o-matic bridge with stop bar. The pickups look identical and sound about the same to my old ears. If you have heard an older Stormbird and liked it, chances are good that you'll like the new one. If you didn't like it, why are you reading this?! Personally, I prefer the new Stormbird for the subtle styling changes and my back loves the lighter weight! So, no, they don't make 'em like they used to - they make 'em better! Listen to RJ's YouTube demo, and if that doesn't sell you, nothing will!
