So, I found a clone Stratocaster neck on eBay awhile back, and was going to make a six string license plate guitar…until I found a good deal on a knotty pine tele body from Tone Bomb Guitars. I reshaped the headstock, and modified the neck to fit the tele pocket, and came up with this. All the hardware and electronics came from CB Gitty…love the sound of those Foundry Tone pickups!

I built this 4-string for my son for Christmas this year. The box is built from pine and wrapped in black walnut the top and back are 3/16 aircraft plywood. The neck is maple with a black walnut fretboard and medium fret wire with a jumbo fret for the zero. The fret dots are old knitting needles sanded flush. All the hardware and the electronics are from C. B. Gitty. The front and back artwork was stenciled on with pencil and then wood burned in. Then painted with acrylic paints. The box has 5 coats of clear poly and the neck has 4 coats of Tung oil. I tuned it to the Arkansas tuning.

This is my interpretation of a mountain dulcimer that has been styled after Leo Fender's work, notably the Stratocaster. It uses many Strat parts, including 3 selectable pickups and a 5-way switch. I made my own bridge plate of brass stock and had it nickel-plated here, but I see that Gitty now has them, at a great price! The body is composed of 2 solid cherry sides, with a full-length maple stick running from top to bottom. This is all glued and pegged together as one unit, then the control cavities are routed out and covered in copper shielding foil. The pickups and controls are mounted on a custom plastic pickguard, which is shielded on the bottom side. Four steel strings run up from the back through string ferrules, then through the hardtail bridge, and over the fingerboard to the 4 chrome machine tuners on the peghead. I call it the "Dulcimaster" electric dulcimer. I've sold several of them now, either like this one, or with a red-painted body and a white plastic pickguard. When I went to build this custom electric dulcimer, I needed several parts which are available from CB Gitty and elsewhere, but CBGitty has the best prices for quality instrument parts. The parts are just what I needed for this project, and work well.

Home made nut and bridge, Celtic cross on front my wife printed out and colored in then I glued it on before putting on the classic oak polyurethane stain.
